What do you hear? - A Toddler Activity

Anyone who has spent time with a Toddler knows how difficult it can be to get them to listen. I've been working on this activity that helps my Toddler pay attention.

What do you hear? - A Toddler Activity

I like to joke that GOD was chuckling to himself when HE gave Toddlers infinite energy that cannot be harnessed. It's amazing how much energy they have, and how much they can influence in a short amount of time. If only there was a way to focus all that energy in a positive direction.

E.g. Anyone who has spent time with a Toddler knows how difficult it can be to get them to listen.

To be fair, I particularly remember my Uncles asking me as a child, whether my ears were just for decoration.

I'm trying to take a more creative approach to this, and have been working on a web app that aims to help my Daughter learn to listen.

Check it out:

The Activity

The game mentions a word, and presents two options. The player has to choose the correct option that matches the word they heard.

It's great for learning to listen, recognizing spoken and written words, and perhaps learning to spell as well.

The hardest part

I've found the hardest part of the activity is getting my Daughter to not immediately click a random option when the round begins, because the options are presented at the same time as the instructions, attracting her attention. My strategy right now is to make a listening gesture with my hand to my ears while the instructions are being read to help her focus.

There's probably a better way to do this. Perhaps an automated visual cue on the screen which is triggered when the round begins, so I don't have to make the gesture at the beginning of each round? Let me know if you have any ideas.
