The big picture

Five blind men were taken to the zoo to “see” an elephant. They were each allowed to feel the elephant, and describe it.

The first felt the elephant’s moving trunk and exclaimed, “this elephant must be like a big pipe”.

The second man felt it’s leg and said, “aha, you’re wrong” to the first man, “this elephant is like a thick tree”

The third had felt the elephant’s side and said, “this elephant must be like a strong wall”

The fourth, who had felt the tail said, “this elephant is like a rope”

The last man felt the tusks brush against his arm, got wounded and said, “this elephant is most definitely like a spear”

Each man argued what the elephant must be like for the rest of the day.

I heard/read this story as a kid, and for me, each blind man is like our religions trying to experience GOD. Each experiences only a part of GOD and believes that is who GOD is.

Like the blind men, who is right and who is wrong?

This is why it’s a bit silly to argue that one religion is better than the other. Because honestly, you don’t know that for a fact.

Like the blind men, we should go home still being friends even though we have different opinions about something we cannot hope to fully understand.

We should accept our differences with love.
