Memory Cards - Puzzles for Toddlers

Did you know Toddlers can solve Puzzles? I was surprised as well to find a Puzzle my Toddler could solve without being coached.

For context, I am building Under4.Games to help me teach my Toddler to learn to read, write, count, spell, solve puzzles, and more.

A few days ago, I decided to shake things up a bit and build a classic memory cards game, wondering if my Toddler would be able to solve it.

The Game

Can you solve this puzzle?

It's a simple game. The player is presented with a n*n grid of cards, with identical grid pairs. The player is required to find all the pairs in sequence.

Watching her figure it out on her own was an absolute delight, and watching her play was a joy. I could see her remembering the cards that she has already seen when she encounters a duplicate.

I think the really fascinating part for me is some of the symbols are images she recognizes e.g. a Bee 🐝 or an Apple 🍎, but others are symbols she didn't know at the time e.g. the number "68". How does she know to distinguish between that and another symbol she doesn't know e.g. the number "32" if she hasn't already been taught those symbols?

Toddlers are amazing.
